ISO TC286 Collaborative Business Relationships

Continued Development of the ISO 44001 Series

16th October 2018

We arrived in Shenzhen, on Monday evening, for a packed four-day schedule of work on the ISO 44001 series of standards and guides.  We were met by a team from our hosts, the Shenzhen Institute of Standards and Technology.  The Technical Committee now consists of national standards body representatives and technical experts from Italy, Sweden, China, the United States and the United Kingdom; unfortunately, Malaysia pulled out earlier in the year.

The first day was devoted to a working group review of ISO 44002, the guide to implementing ISO 44001, steered by the UK.  This received copious amendments to help refine the logic of the individual clauses, and improve the readability of the content, generally.

The second day was taken up by further working group development of the principles for successful collaborative business relationships, piloted by Sweden, which will become ISO 44000 (ISO permitting; this was previously identified as ISO 44003).

After development of two very different flyers of a guide for SMEs, the working group, led by Italy, came to a consolidated view of the purpose/scope of a proposed document and re-committed to the development of ISO 44003, guidelines on the implementation of ISO 44001 for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) (previously identified as ISO 44004).

On the final day, the technical committee committed to the development of a companion guide to assist large organisations to better collaborate with MSMEs.  In order to ensure that both the latter MSME documents received the profile and attention needed, the technical committee has recommended the establishment of a new working group to help promote collaborative business relationships for MSMEs, internationally.

We expect that the next meeting will be held in April 2019.
