International Construction Week 2015

Making Collaboration Work in Kuala Lumpur

12th September 2015

We were delighted to be invited to speak at Ecobuild South-East Asia, in Kuala Lumpur, during the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia's (CIDB's) International Construction Week 2015 (ICW 2015).

Our PaulG presented a seminar, yesterday, on ‘Making Collaboration Work - Creating Value Through Sustainable Business and Project Relationships’.  The subject was chosen in response to the numerous comments that he received, on an earlier visit, that partnering 'cannot work' or 'does not work in Malaysia’.

Thus, the presentation sought to examine local and international motivation to collaborate and experience of collaboration; to identify overriding principles and critical success factors; and to introduce models for the implementation of successful collaborative business and project relationships in construction.

The presentation was followed by a positive technical discussion of partnering with attendees; particularly, with an ex-colleague, from the mid-1990s, who is now a professor at Al Madinah University.

PPC/TPC User Group

The New PPC2015 Family of Alliance Contracts

10th August 2015

We have just reviewed and submitted comments on the new PPC2015 family of Alliance Contracts, consisting of a Framework Alliance Contract, a Term Alliance Contract and a Project Alliance Contract.

The Framework Alliance and the Term Alliance both govern long-term relationships underpinned by joint working across a multi-party integrated team, including collaborative governance systems for improved performance and agreed measures of success.  The Framework Alliance is entirely new while the Term Alliance is an update of the successful TPC2005 Term Partnering Contract. The Project Alliance is a streamlined version of the successful PPC2000 Project Partnering Contract.

All three forms support collaborative working and innovation through contractual processes based upon the early appointment of an integrated team with clearly defined activities and shared information.

All three contract forms include collaborative governance by a ‘Core Group’ to review new proposals and undertake non-adversarial problem-solving. This system has helped ensure only two disputes have gone to court in 15 years of the PPC forms being used on roughly 6% of all projects in the UK.

Each contract is designed to be used in any jurisdiction, with contractual provisions driven by the Legal Requirements of a Country or Special Terms required by a Client.

We expect the final versions of the Contracts to be launched at the annual conference of the PPC/TPC User Groups, which will be held on 15th October, and entitled ‘Back to the Future’, in reference to the 15th anniversary of the launch of the original Project Partnering Contract 2000, aka PPC 2000.
